vAzhé
was established in 1995 by a group of Iranian writers,
poets, dramatists and artists,
who had set their minds against any form of oppression
and were eagerly looking for new forms of expression.
The first public gathering of vAzhé
was held in a small
restaurant and young poets and writers presented their works. After a short
pause vAzhé
moved to U of T as a regular monthly gathering place.
since then organizers of vAzhé
have been able to bring in
both young as well as established authors.
English speaking Canadian authors such as Anne Ireland,
Catherine Govier,
Sandra Martin and Fraser Sutherland have performed for our audience
that usually exceeds 200 in each monthly gathering.
vAzhé
has a close affinity with Pen Canada's objectives and has hosted authors and
journalists such as Faraj Sarkoohi, Ebrahim Nabavi, Mohammad MohamdAli and many
more.
vAzhé
has successfully launched newly published books of
its members.
vAzhé
in Persian
means 'word'
and is from the same root
as voice
in Indo-European languages.
